Leadership competencies: the set of skills, knowledge and personal attributes required for success in a particular role in a particular organisation culture.

This specialised area of applied research is used to identify what it takes to perform roles in an exceptional manner and the qualities that make a real performance difference.

I can either do this for you; train your people to do it, or lead a team of your people to complete the work. I will also provide advice and support about how and where to derive best value from your competency frameworks through their use in people processes in your organisation.

Stages of the work

  1. Use specialised interviewing techniques (repertory grid and critical incidents) to collect competency information from samples of leaders, their superiors and subordinates.
  2. Compare results with existing research findings on leadership competency to validate the information and to check for possible gaps.
  3. Produce a framework with a detailed report illustrating each competency.
  4. Support application of the framework.

Examples

Jill works at clients' premises, at her own offices in West London, and by telephone.

The Client: Large international agency working at the leading edge of technology needed to improve its overall performance.

What they wanted: To establish standards of personal effectiveness in their multi-national organisation where people at every level were working in multi-disciplinary teams.

Approach: Framework of leadership competence developed using the organisation’s own language to use in all the people systems (such as performance appraisal, development planning, designing management development programmes, describing roles.)

The Client: Multinational mining company working through local subsidiaries and encountering resistance to corporate initiatives.

What they wanted: To introduce a consistent approach to training and development of leaders throughout the world.

Approach: Innovative training needs analysis based on leadership competency framework designed with the company.
